Monday Morning Recap, 10.19
There's nothing like the humbling challenge of bringing the Sunday morning message! For me it's always a combination of freight, excitement and humility. And it always feels like I'm with "family."
Did you notice the new female vocalist yesterday? That's Katie (Lee) Carpenter. She's Jason Lee's (JLEE) little sister and she's married to the Tek Team's Travis Carpenter. That was her first time helping lead worship on the big stage. Give her a "way to go" next time you see her.
We had a great kick-off to classes@oakbrook last Wed. Around 90 people came out to "self feed" in the process of living like Jesus. Three of our classes have non-staff teachers! Barbara Gilbert, Mike Bolinger and Dave Dubois are teaching on end times, marriage and apologetics, respectively. Mike and Dave even wrote their own curriculum. Way to go, lay-teachers!
You can still sneak into a class. (sign up online)
Last night OSM had another great week of small groups and then Anthony Cozzello gave the message. He did a great job-his first time in front of our students. He and a group of family and friends drive over from Logansport every week to be part of the OCC family.
How ‘bout that Beatles Concert w/a Cause?! Sold around 1,300 tickets. Bridges got 18 mentors and will receive aprox. $6,000! I heard lots of "first time at occ" stories-all very positive and encouraging-including my neighbor who has always turned down my Sunday morning invites. God can show up in songs like "All You Need is Love" and "Hey Jude" more profoundly to some people than He can in a worship song. Crazy good times, friends.
Some message highlights:
"There are only two things that pierce the human heart. One is beauty. The other is affliction (pain)." -Simone Weil.
"Was it Simon the Zealot or Michael Stipe who said, ‘Everybody hurts, sometimes?'" ![]()
"Snapshots draw our eyes within the frame ---
And pain draws our attention within ourselves."
"For us to stay self-focused on our pain is to ‘dam up' and keep the living water from flowing to others!"
"To figure out that my pain has a purpose, I have to take me eyes off of my snapshot."
"I have to realize that my pain, my wound, is a little slice of life; and that God wants to work in the entirety and enormity of my life and in the enormity of HIS story!"
To understand Jesus' words on the cross ("My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?") we need to read the whole Psalm He was quoting. Read all of Psalm 22. (read online with youversion)
The snapshot of Jesus on the cross contains the power to free us of all the painful snapshots we and future generations will ever encounter. Jesus, knows the way out of our pain because He conquered pain and death.
Don't just talk about it-be about it!
Peace,
-Morgan
