Monday Morning Recap, 01.25
How fun was it to see the Colts roll over the Jets in the second half and win by 13-scoring 24 unanswered points?! Last week we kept the Ravens to 3 and yesterday we win by 13. Bring on the Saints!
It was great to have my friend, Sean Verlee, leading us in worship yesterday.
Ok, due to un-popular demand-- first my opening joke explanation: What did the transcendentalist say to the hot dog vender? I'll have "one with everything." The goal of a transcendentalist is to be "one (or in harmony with) everything. Once again a joke explained ceases to be one ![]()
The primary verse for yesterday's "You Can't Control the Future" talk was: "Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today." Matthew 6:34 nlt (a.k.a. Bobby McFerrin Creed...)
Read the verse in context: Matthew 6:25-34.
That passage and the big idea of the talk in one sentence:
The path to the future is finding God and following Him today.
Every book, movie, The Bible and our life has conflict.
How we navigate the hard middle of life (conflict) will dictate our future.
When we get to our future we will find the results of our decisions today.
We never catapult into the future-we never instantaneously time-travel to the future---we walk there--one day, one decision at a time.
God allows conflict. And Conflict is good for us.
"We can rejoice too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation." Romans 5:3-4 nlt
Here's that verse in one sentence: God uses conflicts to mature us.
What if our goal as parents wasn't "safety and protection"-what if our parenting ethos was to equip and teach our kids how to navigate conflict?
I read chapter 40 from the book of Isaiah to close.
In the middle of the talk I read a passage from Donald Miller's new book "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years." This a truly great and inspiring read that will help you re-think how you're living life. Great for teens to retirees.
Thank-you so much for laughing with me, wrestling with conflict, and finding God together yesterday. The hour on Sunday is one of the best of my week.
Don't miss Mark's Vision Talk next Sunday and then that evening at 6pm one of our special worship and prayer nights.

Thanks for clearing up the Bobby McFerrin reference. I got all your jokes but that one. Now I feel much smarter. Great message on Sunday….as always. Thanks also for the recap earlier of your conversation with Curtis. Almost felt like he was sitting right there with you.
